The Power of Scent

The Power of Scent

Did you know that our nose can distinguish 10,000 different scents?

Scent can attract or repel.  It can help to form the bonds of love; if a woman doesn't like a man's smell, she won't like him.

Scent can transport you to an oasis and stir your imagination.

Scent can cause the memory of a woman to remain in a man's mind when they are apart.

Scent can shelter the wearer inside of a fragranced aura.

"The Costliest Perfume in the World"--Joy was called the break-the-bank scent with 1 oz. containing 10,600 jasmine blossoms and 336 Bulgarian roses
We Love Perfumes--Especially the Classics Such As JOY!
Here Are A Few Fragrance Facts

On our Aromatherapy Page, we discussed the power of herbal essences.  The essence itself is a fragrance.

Perfume has been permeating our senses for many centuries.  Whether used for scenting food, mummification, medicinal purposes, or scenting the body, perfume has had a tremendous impact on humanity.  Fragrance is said to transport us through space and transcends time.  Would you believe it is said that Napoleon would not go into battle without it?!

It seems that every few minutes a new fragrance hits the market.  It seems to make perfume seem so ordinary.  At Embellir, we are extremely partial to the classics and find it rare to truly embrace some of the newer more modern scents of today.  Perfume was of vital importance to Coco Chanel; so much so that Chanel No. 5, her favorite, had to be sprayed each morning down the spacious stairs of her salon.  Her fragrance, as her clothes, are termed as eloquent and unforgettable.  We also like Panthere by Cartier, Arpege by Lanvin is one of the owner's favorites, Dioressence by Dior, almost anything by Guerlain especially Vol de Nuit, and the ones of designers Coco Chanel, Donna Karan, Valentino, YSL, Creed, Jean Patou, Amouage, and Boucheron. Today's Sean's John Unforgettable for men is a very wonderful scent for men.

Unlike scents that are synthesized or chemically isolated from their natural source, pure essential oils have up to hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of biochemical components.  The components are biochemically so complex that they are impossible to duplicate.  Synthetic essences can never replicate the healing action and intelligence of essential oils.  At Embellir, we prefer scents made with as many natural ingredients as possible--natural flowers, seeds, and resins--that is one reason we are drawn toward the classics.  It can take 8,000 jasmine blossoms and 2,000 rose blossoms to produce one pound of absolute of each!  That is why good perfumes can be costly.  However, too many synthetic chemicals may cause an allergic reaction in some people; so we feel that the joy and beauty that these plants deliver are well worth the price!  In the final analysis, we gain nothing from artifical smells and tastes.  Fabricated molecules are eventually recognized as toxins in the body.

Keep in mind, fragrance can be intensely personal and is shared with those in our immediate circle; so choosing the right scent for your personality for the right time is of importance.  You may feel drawn to fragrances in a certain class such as floral, orientals, chypres, greens, etc.  Some fragrances are better suited for day and some for night wear.  However you choose to fragrance your world, never underestimate the power and lure of scent.  Experiment and choose the scents that are just right for you and have fun!

French Perfection
Bewitching, soothing or energizing, perfumes have enhanced human rituals since ancient times. They create an aura of well being and beauty, stimulate senses and imagination and exude confidence. They became popular at the French Court in the 16th century when Queen Marie de Médicis objected to the smell of leather gloves. The fashion was launched and France never looked back.  Today, French perfumes are still considered the best in the world with new fragrances created every year.  Chanel, Dior and Givenchy are just a few of the top designer brands where the mystique never fades.

How to Choose and Wear a Luxury Fragrance
In Grasse, London or Paris, choosing a French perfume is like choosing a dress, it should suit the wearer’s character and the occasion. Perfumes may be described as floral, spicy, wood or leather and range from light eau de toilette to expensive parfums with a high concentration of essential oils. Strength and fragrance are at their best when they match individual mood and body chemistry. Top indicator is the feel good factor.

Experts advise stronger fragrances in the winter months and for evening wear. Since luxury perfumes release three successive notes or scents, most important the last one, it makes sense to apply a fragrance in advance for maximum effect.

Te ideal time to shop for perfume is late afternoon when the skin is more receptive. It’s a good idea to test just one or two on the inside of each wrist.  Perfume works well when applied on pressure points such as behind the ears, throat, ankles, and inside of knees, elbows and wrists.
